Clay has been a part of human culture for centuries and each piece is a many-faceted art form. The Portland area has long been a magnet for creative work. The Arts Council is excited to have Earth, Glaze & Fire on exhibit during the month of May.
Given the variety of firing methods, glazes, and decorative techniques each yields a different result. This show is an exploration of some of the possible combinations resulting in crystalline glaze ware, raku ware, reduction-fired pieces and wood-fired objects allowing the attendee to gain an appreciation of what changing a variable can do. The same clay, same glazing technique, different firing temperature can make twin pieces look completely unrelated. The contrasts give the viewer greater insight into the dynamics of the process, as well as a chance to refine what they like best in the ceramic spectrum illustrated. Join us for looking at the versatility of clay and its limitless possibilities.
A First Friday opening reception will be held on May 5th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the 510 Museum & ARTspace.
May gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 11 to 4 p.m., and by appointment.
