The upcoming exhibition at Artspace, A Distant Center, brings together more than thirty artists whose works address the concept of a center in some capacity. The exhibition will be on view Tuesday–Friday, September 10–October 25th, 2024.
Esteemed Art Historian Sue Taylor, Ph.D., juried this open-call exhibition in collaboration with Artspace Curator Morgan Ritter.
Here, the center is understood as the point in which all attention is focused, where gathering occurs, and activity flows outward; it is also known as the axis, core, or spine. The title, A Distant Center, is sourced from poet Ha Jin’s poem A Center and suggests a momentary sense of stability and resilience in a less-than-unified socio-political landscape.
“It's heartening to see such a variety of talent, artists of all stripes taking pleasure and pride in their explorations—whether of nature, materials, processes, pattern, or the exciting possibilities artmaking offers for emotional expression, humor, or healing.” — Sue Taylor, Ph.D.
Exhibiting artists include Anne Mavor, Ash R Smith, Beth Yazhari, Christa Nye, Claire Browne, Connie Moore, Diane Jacobs, Erin Boberg Doughton, Ingrid Dohm, Jenna Philpott, Jennifer Viviano, John H McComish, Julie Johnson, Justin Jude Carroll, Kate Ampersand, Kyung Yeon Park, Laura Paulini, Leslie Cheney-Parr, Lindsay Boyer, Marlana Stoddard Hayes, Mikalah Ball, Nancy Matanic, Pamela Fedderson, Robert Procter, Robert Sumner, Rose West, Ruth Meijer, Sarah Bouwsma, Sheila DeLaquil, Susan Jones, Susan Waddington, Wayne C Harrel, and Zhang Mao.
